You have requested to read one of the online volumes in the American Buddha Online Library (“ABOL”). Please read the following material and if you agree with the Online Library User and Anti-Piracy Agreement, please click “I AGREE.” You will then be taken to the volume you requested.

ABOL Statement of Purpose

ABOL is a project of American Buddha, an Oregon religious nonprofit corporation. ABOL is operated according to traditional lending library principles, adapted to the Internet. ABOL acquires all of its archival contents lawfully, and after fair-use medium-shifting, permits library members to view them, on the understanding that they will abide by the fair use rules that are part of the ABOL Online Library User and Anti-Piracy Agreement.  The purpose of sharing the works in this manner is multifold:

1. To make available works to persons in parts of the world where bookstores and libraries are unavailable, or have inadequate spiritual, philosophical, scientific and fictional titles.

2. To preserve books that are out of print, are hard to obtain, or have fallen into “cult” status.

3. To provide easy access to users of the American-Buddha.com and ChildofFortune.com Bulletin Boards who wish to research, quote and discuss these works in their posts.

4. To stimulate interest in the works, and encourage the release of new print editions, and purchases of available volumes.

5. To provide a resource for further review of the original text by readers whose interest is piqued by the reviews and discussions of the works on the American-Buddha.com and ChildofFortune.com websites and Bulletin Boards.

ABOL is opposed to copyright piracy, defined as the distribution of protected works maliciously or for profit in a manner that is likely to injure sales of the pirated works. ABOL wishes to encourage sales of print works, and does not profit from the viewing of works on the American-Buddha.com website.

Notice to ABOL Users (37 C.F.R. 201.14)

When an ABOL member requests to view any HTML document that is in the ABOL archive, ABOL will permit the member to make a copy, that becomes their property, to be stored in the files of the member's computer. The creation of this file is performed within the fair use limitations of 17 U.S.C. 108, which requires that all ABOL members therefore be provided this notice, pursuant to 37 C.F.R. 201.14:

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction.

One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.'' If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use,'' that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
