Back in Trinidad, Saharan dust is now a prime suspect in Michele
Monteil’s investigation into the rise of childhood asthma.

[Michele Monteil] Patients with asthma would say to me, “You know,
doctor, my symptoms are worse when there’s dust in the air.”

[Michele Monteil] Okay, here’s some more patient files.

[Michele Monteil] So I certainly wanted to investigate whether there was
any correlation between dust cloud cover over Trinidad and asthma
admissions.
[Michele Monteil] This will be good inclusion criteria. Sherad, what
about the Saharan dust visibility data and some of the climactic factors
…

With the help of some of her medical students, Monteil spent hours
analyzing case records, searching for a link between asthma admissions
and African dust. In the end, they found a significant pattern.
