LAKE GURU, VENEZUELA


Clues can be found 37 miles up river on a similar chain of islands. They
were created by another hydroelectric project completed almost two
decades ago, and since then researchers have been tracking intriguing
changes. For biologist John Terborgh it’s a scientific opportunity he
daydreamed about for years.



[John Terborgh, Duke University] We are in an extremely usual place,
bizarre by anybody’s criteria. It’s artificial in every respect. A huge
dam has produced a lot of islands out of what was a continuous landscape
before, yet that’s what, that’s what makes it interesting for us because
it is in fact a gigantic experiment.
