What do most of us look for in our
neighborhoods? How about tranquility? What is a city or suburb anyway
except a line in the sand?

On one side, we believe we are in
charge, that our rules are the ultimate law.

But beyond city limits, the dangerous
forces of nature still hold sway.

For years we’ve assumed our struggle
with wild animals were mostly behind us. Especially our triumph over the
big predators, ones that use to haunt our dreams. We’re better off
without wolves and mountain lions and grizzly bears, aren’t we?

Now some scientists are starting to
wonder as they investigate unsettling changes around the world, forests
we believed we were protecting are seriously disappearing, coral reefs
are dying before our very eyes, ravenous pests are running rampant in
our subdivisions.
