James Matthews: Art is very important. Through each medium you must express your anger, you must fight the State.
I've always been writing political poetry. Two years ago was the first time that I started writing love poetry as well. And Nina Simone is the woman that I feel very close to. When I was in prison in 1976, I finished a collection of poetry and the book is dedicated to Nina. And each time I bring out a book of poetry there is a poem or two for Nina. Let me read you this one:
Weaving threads of sound is the song Nina sings / Warm are the words in which I wrap myself / The notes honey sweet with tenderness / A lullaby to ease my troubled spirit / I surrender to its sweet sound and reach out to embrace love / Sing Nina, sing.
DISTRICT SIX Song: There's a new world coming.
And it's just around the bend.
