I went through
my whole tour in Vietnam without a set of dogtags. Anything but
thinking about where you were.

When you started
thinking about where you were, that's when you started getting in
trouble. And that's when I started getting in trouble.

It was when I
started really seeing.

I started seeing
stuff like I'm seeing right now.

You know, the
way we judged our success was through body count.

And most of the
time, even though I was part of the command structure, being first a
squad leader and then a platoon sergeant, most of the time it's supposed
to be my responsibility to do things like check the bodies.

But I never
wanted to do that.

That's not what
I want to do, or understand I was doing.
