ANTONI GAUDI ART AND ARCHITECTURE |
|
"The cross section of the Guell house shows the variety of spaces within the building, which was perhaps the most carefully designed and finished, as well as the most costly of the private homes which Gaudi built. Each of the main rooms affords a different sense of space; yet these spaces are carefully related and flow easily one into the other. They are arranged around a "Central four-storey living room". This room is domed and lighted from the top through openings in the roof as well as by the four lateral skylights. The treatment and decoration of ceilings is oriental in character with occasional reminiscences of Venetian palace architecture. The basement floors were used for stables; the mezzanine for office space; the second floor, or main floor, for reception and living rooms; the third and fourth for sleeping quarters." (James Johnson Sweeney and Josep Lluis Sert, "Antoni Gaudi")
