 Luis Bunuel's "Belle de Jour"

Stop!  I beg you to tell them to let me go!

What is the excuse for this kind of violence towards women? Bunuel had a dark misogynistic side, of that there is no doubt.  When he was a child, none of the women in his family were allowed to eat sausage, only the men were allowed to eat it. Women had no rights in his family, and as an adult, he predated on his mother. Bunuel was very much the spoiled rich Spanish boy, ordering women around as if they were his slaves.  I do not like his nasty trick of making it Catherine's fantasy to be dragged around in the dirt and hung shirtless in the tree. Fucker. If such a thing were to happen to any woman, it would be terrifying. Women's force fantasies NEVER go that far, not to real violence.  They are mellow, gentle force fantasies, with gentleness predominating.  No one wants to get hurt.

And what's wrong with Catherine that she would play such a role? She thinks she's too beautiful so she must do penance?  Can't stand to be the Queen that she is? Wants to be like all of the other ordinary mortals, smear dirt on her face like they did to her in Donkey Skin, clean out the pig trough, play psycho-girl in all of Bunuel's movies? So Bunuel can perpetuate the same, old, repressive, patriarchal way of looking at things?  Willingly participate in a female sacrifice?  Luis Bunuel was always going off on actors' "overacting," but what he really wanted was for them not to get in the way of HIS overacting.  This is way too extreme.  It's anarchy in art.  I'd like to drag HIM around in the dirt, and hang HIM from a tree.

When every filmmaker in the world should have been begging Catherine Deneueve to star in their Queen of the Universe film, glorifying the most beautiful woman who ever lived, instead they wasted their time dragging her through the dirt!

[Rafael Garcia Martos, Electrician "Tristana"] The time she gets her leg cut off, Bunuel wanted her to be ugly.
