PLEASURING THE PRESIDENT

His 'Sceptre' Isn't Working, by Tara Carreon

"I love the boy because he's clever, not because he's pretty."

Jon Stewart, Daily Show:  Serving at the Pleasure of the President

[Jon Stewart] Welcome back to the program.  Now getting back to the attorney general scandal, more and more reporters were pressing Gonzales over whether or not he should resign.  But he assured everyone, the matter was out of his hands ...

[Alberto Gonzales] All political appointees such as U.S. attorneys, serve at the pleasure of the President ... I serve at the pleasure of the President of the United States ... Ultimately I serve at the pleasure of the President of the United States ... I work for the American people and I serve at the pleasure of the President of the United States ... I serve at the pleasure of the President of the United States.

[Jon Stewart] By the way, 'at the pleasure of the president?'  It's kind of a lousy talking point, but a great romance novel!

"At The Pleasure of the President," by Diane Felice

But the problem with the phrase, 'I serve at the pleasure of the president", it makes the President appear to be a king, a monarch -- 'Bring me the Attorney General, and some Moroccan boys and fruit!'  I'm sure the President himself would reject that type of language.

[George Bush] U.S. Attorneys and others serve at the pleasure of the President.

[Jon Stewart] Adding ... [clapping hands briskly for the Moroccan boys]  Bush has given himself a lot of opportunities during his administration for pleasure, be it through his spokesman ...

[Scott McClellan] Well we all serve at the pleasure of the president.

[Jon Stewart] Through bad diplomacy ...

[John Bolton] Well, you know, I serve at the pleasure of the President.

[Jon Stewart] Mishandling of Iraqi civilian deaths in Haditha ...

[Gen. Michael Hagee, Marine Corps Commandant] I serve at the pleasure of the President.

[Jon Stewart] Or just a whole host of fuckups ...

[Donald Rumsfeld] As someone who was appointed and nominated by the President, and serves at the pleasure of the President ... we all serve at the pleasure of the President ... I intend to serve the President at his pleasure.

[Jon Stewart] Can I say something about that ol' Rumsfeld?  Donald Rumsfeld was a pleasure machine!

Now, Mr. President, we all take pleasure in different things.  I have my guilty pleasures, you have yours.  Yours is apparently incompetent subordinates bungling our domestic and foreign affairs.  Mine is Super Nanny.

You know, I remember the previous president had someone who served at his pleasure.  But in retrospect, I get that.  This! You! What you apparently get pleasure from?  You sick son-of-a-bitch!
