ANTONIO GAUDI, BY GEORGE R. COLLINS

SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Where appropriate, a comment is included after the listing to explain the value of the item.

To save space most books and articles on special subjects which are cited in the Notes are not repeated here, but may be located through their subject entry in the Index.  However, titles that are used throughout the text in abbreviated form will be found listed here in full.

Almost without exception the items cited in this book can be consulted in the archive of the Amigos de Gaudi U.S.A. (in the Department of Fine Arts and Archaeology of Columbia University) or in neighboring libraries.

A large part of this material, including much that is basic, is written in Catalan.

(A) Basic books or pamphlets dedicated to Gaudi.  These include monographs, picture books and anthologies of articles, but not publications dedicated to single buildings, which can be located in the Notes by consulting the index.

(D) The only one of Gaudi's works about which a full length monograph has appeared is the Church of the Sagrada Familia.  The following is a portion of the immense bibliography on it:

The bookstore, Libreria Herederos de la Vda. Pla (see note 36) has from time to time published small booklets and large albums with photographs and essays about the Sagrada Familia, for sale at the site.  The title varies; editions have been printed in 1915, c. 1917, 1925, 1936, 1947, 1952.

The bookstore also published a periodical, El Propagador de la Devocion a San Jose (1867-1936, 1943-48) which has been continued as Templo since 1948.  From 1915-36 an annual Calendario Josefina was issued at year-end for the following year.   All are full of articles on Gaudi and the church works--see listings in Rafols 1929 and 1952.

BOOKS:

A Cirici Pellicer, J. Gomis, J. Prats Valles, La Sagrada Familia: fotoscop (Barcelona:  Omega, 1952).  80 striking pictures.

Idem, La Sagrada Familia (Barcelona:  Ayma, 1952).

Isidro Puig Boada, El Temple de la Sagrada Familia (Barcelona:  Barcino, 1929).  This first edition of the standard book on the building is in Catalan.  It has been republished in Spanish with many more plates (Barcelona:  Omega, 1952).

ARTICLES:

Discussions of the building have appeared in L'Osservatore Romano on 18 Dec. 1921, 6 Jan. 1922, 3 Oct. 1952.

Special items in El Propagador and Templo that should be mentioned are a report on the war destruction in the former (LXXVIII, 1943, pp. 4-8); in the latter a history of the models (LXXXIII, Feb. 1948), and a chronicle of the enterprise (LXXXV, Oct. 17, 1951).

An interesting report from Madrid is in El Universo, 7 & 8 Dec. 1914.

Juan Maragall published essays on the building in Diario de Barcelona, 19 Dec. 1900, 7 Nov. 1905, 19 March 1906, and in Ilustracio Catalana, 15 Jan. 1905.  They can be found in his collected works.  See notes 5, 14.

(E) Gaudi is discussed in many general books on art, architecture and Spain.  His works are invariably mentioned in travel books, guide books, biographical dictionaries, picture books of Catalonia and in general surveys of Spanish art.  These are too numerous to list here, but we cite a few that are of interest and have not appeared in the Notes:

(F) BACKGROUND:  books, periodicals and articles that discuss or illustrate aspects of Catalan art and architecture between about 1850 and 1950.  Most of these take up Gaudi as part of the general ambient.  Monographs or articles dealing with specific architects among his forerunners, contemporaries, assistants and followers are listed in the Notes and can be located by consulting the individual's name in the Index.

(G) BACKGROUND:  The following deal more specifically with aspects of Modernismo, the Spanish Art Nouveau, usually treating Gaudi as well:

The movement and the subsequent classicistic reaction to it can be followed in two different series of local avant-garde periodicals:  Luz (1898), Quatre Gats (1899), Pel & Ploma (1899-1903), Forma (1904-08); Joventut (1900-1906), Garba (1906--).

R. Benet and r. Llates, Quatre Gatsi (Barcelona:  Barna, 1954).  Catalog of the exhibit of Modernista painting at the Sala Pares.

A. Cirici Pellicer, El arte modernista catalan (Barcelona: Ayma, 1951).  With its more than 500 illustrations, color plates and  facsimiles and its masses of biographical data, this volume is basic for study of the period.

La Esquella de la Torratxa XX (17 June 1898).  Contemporary issue of one of Barcelona's leading humor magazines devoted to a caricature of Modernismo.

James Grady, "A Bibliography of the Art Nouveau," J. of the Society of Architectural Historians XIV (May 1955).  See also note 54.

J. F. Rafols, Modernismo y modernistas (Barcelona:  Destino, 1949).  Somewhat more literary and anecdotal in character, this is a valuable complement to Cirici's volume for Catalan studies.  It is an expansion of Rafols' smaller book, el arte modernista en Barcelona (Barcelona:  Dalmau, 1943).
