23. Racism -- Intuition Within Fire
Seeing one’s brothers and sisters as if
they were strangers, being loyal to manipulators with the same color
skin, is the sickness of RACISM. The hexagram displays five open circles
surrounded by a single closed circle. Thus, humanity, a single species,
is polarized into racial groups by cynical abusers who perpetuate the
cycle of WAR. When the members of one race are alienated against members
of other races, humanity is torn down the middle, and the species as a
whole is unable to address its global problems. Those who benefit from
the rift are represented by the solid outer circle, the “upper-crust” of
society, who place their faith in the discredited traditions of
monarchy, aristocracy, and racial purity. These exploiters inherited
powerful positions founded on the vast apparatus of colonial
exploitation that transformed the world’s cultural and ecological
diversity into a megaplex of raw materials extraction, manufacturing,
transportation, communication, trade, banking, and technocratic
propaganda. All of the inner circles are open, symbolizing exploitation
of the people by the dominator class that incites disunity and keeps
society locked in petty struggles over territory, skin color, tribes,
religions, and language.
On INTUITION, the Inner Trigram: The pure
openness of INTUITION symbolized by three open circles in the Inner
Trigram, being subjected to the unrestrained influence of FIRE. There is
a natural tendency for people to love their own kin, but the abusers of
humanity have hijacked the INTUITION of kinship to generate hatred
against those who do not resemble them physically.
On FIRE, the Outer Trigram: The force of
FIRE, physically the product of combustion fed by fuel and oxygen,
symbolizes emotive force that inflames passion. The actual differences
between races are combustible fuel, while oxygen for the conflagration
of hatred is provided by the steady wind of social pressure applied
through the media and political institutions that persist in sowing
division among human beings.
